LAHORE -  Lahore has once again topped the list of the most polluted cities in Pakistan, with the air quality index exceeding 500. Recent measurements show alarming levels, including 876 in Polo Ground Cantt and 864 in DHA Phase 8, raising significant health concerns among residents.

Following a temporary reduction in smog, educational institutions resumed activities yesterday, allowing students to return to schools, colleges, and universities. However, an awareness campaign is being launched to enforce mandatory mask usage among students.

In response to worsening air quality, the Lahore district administration has banned construction activities until November 24. Access to entertainment venues and parks has also been restricted, with markets and shopping malls required to close by 8 PM and restaurants by 10 PM.

Authorities are actively enforcing smog standard operating procedures (SOPs), with the Lahore district administration taking decisive action against violators. The provincial government has urged citizens to follow safety measures to mitigate health risks, particularly as changing wind patterns raise concerns about respiratory diseases.

Senior provincial minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized the importance of collective efforts to protect public health, stating that the Punjab government is dedicated to providing a cleaner and safer environment for its citizens.

In a proactive move, the Environmental Protection Department conducted inspections at educational institutions this morning and issued notices for non-compliance with smog regulations. Additionally, several non-zigzag kilns in DG Khan, Lodhran, Jhang, Vehari, and Multan have been dismantled for violating smog rules.

In the last 24 hours, 12 industrial units in Lahore have been sealed, and FIRs have been filed against three factories for failing to adhere to environmental standards. The situation highlights the urgent need for ongoing vigilance and community cooperation in addressing Lahore's air quality crisis.
